Feast your eyes on the original 911 safari. Between 1970 and 1971, Porsche made 33 911 ST cars purpose-built for rally racing, and five, including the one pictured here, for the East African Safari Rally. New FIA rules allowed for a two-inch wider track, and Porsche took full advantage, widening the wheel arches for seven-inch front and nine-inch rear wheels. In addition, Porsche put the 911 ST on a severe diet, using plastic front and rear bumpers, hood, and Plexiglas side and rear windows to reduce weight. Thinner gauge steel for the body panels and a completely stripped interior were also specified. Strut tower braces front and rear along with ventilated brakes were utilized, and the 2.5-liter made 270 horsepower. This ultra-rare 911 has been completely restored by expert Gary Kempton and will be auctioned off by Gooding & Co.
