LR2 Hillside House

Perched above Pasadena, Montalba Architects stacks a series of volumes on a hillside to create the LR2 House. The 4,200-square-foot residence utilizes a matchbox concept, layering rectangular masses against the steep slope. Each one is rotated to obtain its own outdoor spaces for a collection breezeways, porches, courtyards, and rooftops to take advantage of the California climate and mountain vistas. While its dark, angular exterior creates a monolithic facade, white walls and natural light produce a contrasting atmosphere on the interior. The restrained palette and minimalist aesthetic allows the focus to remain on the expansive views of the landscape.
